Grant King, Managing Director, Origin Energy, addressed a Business Lunch for over 200 business executives in a keynote speech where he shared his views around "The Road to Paris: Post 2020 Climate Change Goals". This lunch was proudly sponsored by Macquarie Capital and Optus.
The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris in December 2015 is an important milestone for Australia and the world, for climate change targets and action beyond 2020. Australia is often portrayed as a climate change laggard but the facts show that we have performed well compared to major economies, particularly when the energy intensive export focus of our economy is taken into consideration. The energy sector is the largest contributor to Australia's carbon emissions and an important part of our economic growth and wealth. Actions to reduce carbon emissions can be taken across the energy value chain without compromising our international competitiveness or the high standard of living that we enjoy.
Grant King was appointed Managing Director of Origin Energy Limited at the time of its demerger from Boral Ltd in February 2000, and was Managing Director of Boral Energy from 1994. Under his stewardship, Origin has grown to be the leading Australian integrated energy company, with operations spanning natural gas exploration and production, power generation and energy retailing. Through Australia Pacific LNG, its incorporated joint venture with ConocoPhillips and Sinopec, Origin is also developing one of Australia’s largest CSG to LNG projects based on Australia’s largest 2P CSG reserves base.
Origin has a strong focus on ensuring the sustainability of its operations, is the largest green energy retailer in Australia and a leading installer of solar PV, and has significant investments in large scale renewable energy technologies.
Prior to joining Boral, Grant was General Manager, AGL Gas Companies. He is Chairman of Contact Energy Ltd (since October 2004), a councillor of the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association, a Director of the Business Council of Australia and Chairman of the Business Council of Australia Infrastructure & Sustainability Growth Committee.
He is a former Director of Envestra Ltd (1997-2007) and former Chairman of the Energy Supply Association of Australia Ltd. Grant is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
