Michael was admitted to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of South Australia in 1966, after graduating from the University of Adelaide in 1965.
He was appointed to the Queen's Counsel in South Australia in 1984, and is admitted to practice in all States and Territories where he has either been appointed a Queen's Counsel or a Senior Counsel.
Michael Abbott has appeared in the Supreme Courts of all States and Territories of Australia and has appeared extensively in the Federal Court of Australia and succesfully (& unsuccessfully) argued a number of cases before the High Court of Australia.
He has been the Chair of the Criminal Law Committee of the Law Society of South Australia and has served with distinction on other committees of The Law Society in the past. He also served as the President of the South Australian Bar Association for 3 years and has been the representative of South Australian Bar Association to the Australian Bar Association.
Currently Michael Abbott is the Chairman of the Legal Services Commission of South Australia and is in the process of creating significant changes to that organisation so that it is better able to serve the public and legal profession.
He was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2000, the Indo-Australian Award for Meritorious Service to the Bilateral Relationship in 2002 and was awarded an AO for his services to law, the arts and international relations, particularly international cultural relations.
