A conversation with the Senate for South Australia, introduced by the Hon. Anne Ruston, Minister for Families & Social Services and Minister of Women’s Safety. Who will be joined by: Senator Simon Birmingham, Minister for Finance and Leader of the Government in the Senate, Senator Andrew McLachlan CSC, and Kerrynne Liddle, Liberal Senate Candidate, Consultant, and Board Director.

Minister for Families & Social Services and Minister for Women’s Safety, the Hon. Anne Ruston has been a Senator since September 2021. She was appointed Assistant Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources in September 2015, before subsequently being appointed Assistant Minister for International Development and the Pacific in August 2018. She is also the Manager of Government Business in the Senate. Prior to her appointment as Senator, Anne has held several senior positions in government and the private sector, including the inaugural chief executive of the National Wine Centre. As well as working as a primary producer and irrigator, owning, and operating the largest commercial rose garden in Australia. Born and raised in Renmark, on the River Murray in South Australia, Anne is a proud activate for regional communities.

Simon Birmingham was appointed as Minister for Finance in October 2020 as well as holding the responsibilities of Leader of the Government in the Senate and Special Minister of State. Simon grew up near Gawler in Adelaide’s north on his family’s small horse agistment property and was educated at local schools before going on to study at the University of Adelaide, where he completed a Masters of Business Administration. Prior to entering the Senate, Simon worked for several industry bodies, establishing experience in the wine, tourism, and hospitality sectors – industries critical to South Australia’s prosperity. After less than three years in the Senate, he was appointed to the Shadow Ministry, serving as Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for the Murray-Darling Basin and the Environment until the change of government in 2013. Where he went on to serve as:

  • Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Environment
  • Assistant Minister for Education and Training
  • Minister for Education and Training
  • Manager of Government Business in the Senate
  • Minister for Trade, Tourism, and Investment
  • Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate

Simon is married with two young daughters, a proud Adelaide Crows fan and active advocate for mental health and ovarian cancer.

Senator Andrew McLachlan CSC is a Senator for South Australia. Prior to his appointment in Federal Parliament, Andrew was a member of the Legislative Council of the South Australian Parliament where he served as President. Before his election to Parliament, he worked as a lawyer, held senior positions in the financial services industry and is a Colonel in the Australian Army Reserve, and served in Afghanistan.

Liberal Senate candidate Kerrynne Liddle is a consultant and board director in areas of professional training for doctors and in justice for Aboriginal people, who encounter the police and legal system. She has extensive experience in leadership and management, spanning across a range of small, medium, and large organisations in both the public and private sectors. In the past ten years, Kerrynne has worked in areas of governance, management, and administration (on boards and in director and chair roles), stakeholder and community engagement and in the media and communications industry as a news reporter for ABC Radio and TV and commercial networks. Including:

  • Ministerial Advisor to Senator Anne Ruston
  • Executive General Manager for Change, Leadership and Business Improvement
  • Chief People and Performance Officer for Voyages Ayers Rock Resort
  • External Affairs Advisor for Chevron Australia
  • Manager in Aboriginal Participation for Santos Ltd

Kerrynne’s qualifications are extensive, including a Masters in Business Administration, Bachelor of Arts (Management), Diploma Australian Institute of Company Directors, Fellow Vincent Fairfax Fellowship, and Radio & TV Journalism Cadetship. She is now also a published writer, lives with her husband of 29 years, two children, British shorthair cat, blue heeler, and far too many tropical fish.
