The Changing Medium of Media Breakfast

Panelists Max Walters, Managing Director of Channel Seven Brisbane, David Fagan, Editor-in-Chief of Queensland Newspapers and Sean Ryan, General Manager of Nova 106.9 led an interactive discussion into "The Changing Medium of Media" at a breakfast event on Wednesday 23 February 2011.

In recent years there has been a radical shift in the way we access information and news.

With the introduction of new ‘real-time’ mediums such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, online news, live news streaming and global news networks; we ask ourselves – where does this leave traditional media?

This ‘not to be missed’ breakfast forum will provide attendees with insightful opinions and discussion from key media industry leaders about how the evolving media landscape has changed their media edge and how they plan to shape the future within their 'Media Medium' in order to continue to compete as an effective method of communication.

An expert speaker panel has been convened, comprising:

MAX WALTERS OAM, Managing Director, Channel Seven Brisbane

Max Walters is the Managing Director of Channel Seven Brisbane, having been appointed to this position in January 2004.

Prior to this appointment Mr Walters’ served as Managing Director of Channel Seven Adelaide. Other past positions include various roles at KPMG; Financial Controller of Watkins Pacific Limited; Finance Director of Channel Seven Brisbane and Station Manager of Channel Seven Brisbane.

He is a current Board member of the State Library Foundation, Chairman of the Lord Mayor's Disaster Relief Trust and is a former Board member of the Wesley Research Institute, the Flinders Medical Centre Foundation and ACT for Kids (Abused Child Trust).

A former Sheffield Shield cricketer and Queensland Chairman of Selectors, Max was awarded an Australian Sports Medal in August 2000 for services to cricket and an OAM in January 2011 for services to Cricket, the Queensland Community, and the Media.

DAVID FAGAN, Editor-in-Chief, Queensland Newspapers

David Fagan is editor-in-chief of News Queensland which publishes The Courier-Mail and The Sunday Mail. He was appointed in 2010 after almost eight years as editor of The Courier-Mail, the major news and information source for Queenslanders. Under his leadership, The Courier-Mail has grown its readership in print and online and now reaches one in three Queenslanders at least once a week.

David has been a journalist since 1978, most of that time reporting business and politics at either The Courier-Mail or The Australian where he was a deputy editor before returning to Queensland in 2002.

SEAN RYAN, General Manager, Nova 106.9

Since Sean Ryan launched commercial radio station Nova 106.9 in April 2005, he has built a thriving business which continues to dominate Brisbane’s radio ratings.

Prior to his role with Nova, Sean managed 21 radio stations for DMG Radio in Townsville for three years. He also spent 14 years with WIN television, where he held a number of senior roles.

Sean is committed to a number of charities, including the Starlight Children’s Foundation, the Queensland Institute of Medical Research and the Variety Club Children’s Charity. Sean is also involved in many organisations such as Brisbane City Smart, Lord Mayor’s Business Round Table, Brisbane Sister Cities, Brisbane Marketing, Lord Mayor’s Multicultural Round Table and Asia Pacific Cities Summit.
