Mike Smith, Chief Executive Officer, ANZ, 25 September 2008

Major Business Lunch

Mike Smith, CEO of ANZ was interviewed by the KGB: Alan Kohler, Robert Gottliebsen and Stephen Bartholomeusz in front of 850 business executives at a Chamber Business Lunch. This event was held at the Westin Sydney and was generously partnered by Dow Jones, IBM and Nice Systems.

While Australia is benefiting from its proximity to Asia and the sustained boom in the resources sector, the economy is facing numerous challenges with the effect of global financial turmoil associated with the US sub prime crisis including a tightening of credit availability and rising funding costs. At the same time economic growth in Australia is softening and inflation is emerging as a concern. What's the outlook for financial services and for business in Australia in this uncertain environment?

Mike Smith joined ANZ as Chief Executive Officer in October 2007. He is tasked with navigating ANZ, one of the largest companies in Australia and among the top 50 banks in the world, through these opportunities and challenges.
