Young Entrepreneurs' Panel - The secrets of our success, Young Business Forum Reception, 5 July, 2008
Young Business Forum
Lisa Messenger, Managing Director, Messenger Marketing; Mike Rosenbaum, Co-Founder, DealsDirect.com.au; and Katie Patrick, Founder & Editor, Green Pages shared their successful entrepreneurial journeys at the Chamber's Young Business Forum reception in Sydney. This event was kindly partnered by Cliftons and Grant Thornton.
At only 27 years of age, Mike Rosenbaum, is one of Australia’s most prominent young entrepreneurs. In October 2004, with a passion for eCommerce and online technology, Mike, along with business partner Paul Greenberg, established DealsDirect.com.au, which has quickly emerged as one of the fastest growing Australian online shopping destinations.
At the tender age of 27, starting with no money, Katie Patrick undertook to sell $100k worth of advertising for a business that didn’t really exist. Her ‘motivational tape’ approach to selling seemed to work, and a year later she took on a $1.3 million VC investment. Green Pages has now been trading for two years, with 20 employees, five publications a year and an eye-catching website. And it’s all dedicated to saving the planet. Katie is currently working on plans to take Green Pages global, because “Green is really hot right now.”
In 2004, Lisa Messenger authored and produced a photographic book ‘Happiness Is…’ which supported the charity Kids Help Line. To avoid the constraints imposed by traditional publishers, she self-published the book and as a result developed a custom funding and distribution model that is unique in Australia. This success led to her being named a finalist in the 2005 & 2006 Telstra Business Woman of the Year. Most recently, she was named Entrepreneur of the Year by think tank movement, Thought Leaders.
